Etna Summit Tour - 2900mt excursion from Taormina
Etna
-
Description
Reach the base of the summit craters of Mount Etna and experience the volcano from a higher and more spectacular perspective — without demanding hiking.
This tour takes you to the northern side of the volcano, far from mass tourism, where the landscape is wilder and more authentic. Instead of the cable car, you will ascend by 4x4 vehicles up to approximately 2,900 metres, reaching the area near the volcanological observatory — for a more immersive and less crowded experience.
Ascent by 4x4 to 2,900 metres
The excursion begins on the northern side of Mount Etna at around 1,800 metres altitude. From there, you will board 4x4 vehicles and ascend to approximately 2,900 metres, near the volcanological observatory. The off-road journey itself is part of the experience, offering views and access that no cable car can match.
Guided walk at high altitude
Once at high altitude, you will enjoy an easy guided walk of about 40 minutes, with views of the North-East crater and the surrounding volcanic landscape. You will walk through a lunar-like environment shaped by lava flows and extinct craters, with breathtaking panoramic views stretching from the lava fields to the sea — including Taormina and the Strait of Messina.
Visit to a volcanic cave
After the walk and a stop for a light snack (not included), you will visit a volcanic cave (lava tube), equipped with helmets and headlamps provided on site.
Throughout the entire experience — both the off-road ascent and the walk — you will be accompanied by a certified guide who will explain the volcanic phenomena and the unique characteristics of Mount Etna.
This tour is not available during winter due to snow and ice conditions. The itinerary may vary depending on weather and volcanic conditions.
