SAVOCA AND FORZA D'AGRO' (GODFATHER TOUR)
Savoca, a town built on the top of a rocky hill, is parte of the Valle D’Agrò touristic itinerary and since 2008 is part of “The most beautiful towns in Italy”. The town is famous for being chosen as a location for various films, the most famous being “The Godfather” by Francis Ford Coppola in 1972, and in 2007 for “La Vita Rubata”(The stolen life) an Italian TV movie based on a true story about the local mafia.
Forza d'Agrò is another medieval town built a rocky hilltop 420m above sea level. The main monuments are the Cathedral of the Annunciation (XVI century), the Agostinian convent, the Holy Trinity Church, and the ruins of a Norman castle (XIV century). Forza D’Agrò along with Savoca was also a location for “The Godfather” with numerous scenes being filmed here.
CASTELMOLA AND TAORMINA
Castelmola is a natural balcony which not only overlooks Taormina, but also the majestic “Etna” with its little towns built on the mountainside, the Ionian coast, the cape of S. Alessio, Messina, and the Calabrian coastline.
Taormina is unique for its natural beauty. From the main square, Piazza IX Aprile, there is a magnificent view of Etna and the bay of Naxos. Every angle of Taormina deserves a visit, a sightseers paradise you are spoilt for choice of what to see first.
ALCANTARA GORGE
Alcantara Gorge is a unique place in Sicily that consists of immense natural canyons 50 meters deep carved out by an ancient lava flow, forming the icy waters of the Alcantara River. Many beautiful sights like water falls, vertical basalt cliffs of whimsical forms and numerous shallows, can be admired. Over the years many artists have tried to describe, portray and capture the natural beauty of the scenery, which in 2010, was bestowed with the European recognition EDEN (European destination of Excellence).
SYRACUSE AND NOTO
Syracuse, with its archeological, artistic and monumental treasures, perfectly sums up the history of Sicily. In 2005 it became a World Heritage Site of UNESCO, and is principally known for its Greek history. The Neapolis Archeological Park, the ancient heart of the city, is where most of the Greek and Roman monuments can be found.
Noto, named by UNESCO as the Baroque capital of Europe, is the small town where more than ever it is possible to admire the “triumph of baroque”: Churches, convents, Palaces, Piazzas, fountains.
AGRIGENTO AND PIAZZA ARMERINA
Agrigento was founded by the Greeks in 580bc with the name of Akragas. A tourist destination of great importance especially for the museum and the famous Valley of the Temples. In 1998 it was nominated in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tour includes visits to the museum and the ruins of the temples (Concordia, Hercules, Olympian Zeus, Juno, Athena).
Piazza Armerina, also known as the city of mosaics, is world famous for the Roman Villa del Casale. The town is in the centre of Sicily at 700m above sea level and is surrounded by forests and natural landscapes.
PALERMO AND MONREALE
Palermo, of Phoenician origin between VIII AND VII centuries B.C. , was also inhabited by the Sicans and the Cretans, in the XII century B.C. The name Palermo is of Greek origin meaning “port”. It is the capital city of Sicily and the 5th most populated in Italy.
Monreale is situated at the bottom of Mount Caputo at 310m above seal level. The Cathedral, decorated in gold, is the most important example of the Norman architecture in Sicily. Built in the XII century, it is famous for the Byzantine mosaics on the internal walls,(the second biggest in the world).
